ARTIST STATEMENT:

Step into the footmarks of your ancestors.  Tradition may weaken but cannot disappear.

- From A Dogon Prayer

For me, painting is an endless search for discovery, reflective thinking and invention based upon my ancestral heritage.  The motifs, images and icons found in my work are copied, reshaped and integrated into a contemporary artistic aesthetic.

- James Phillips

"I don't consider myself painting in the AfriCobra tradition, because I was painting that way before I joined the group. I am deeply indebted to both Weusi and AfriCobra because what I didn't get from one group I got from the other. For example, from Weusi it was the style that I developed and AfriCobra the political focus, however, I feel that I have made a significant contribution to both groups."
